Infrastructure Isn’t Location-Based Anymore. Here’s What That Means.
Why identity, policy, and real-world architecture decisions are reshaping modern infrastructure, and why infrastructure location matters less than it used to
For a long time, infrastructure strategy was built around a pretty simple assumption: everything lived in one place.
Applications sat in the data center. Users connected back to it. Security was anchored at the edge. The network was designed from the inside out, and infrastructure location was a defining factor in how everything operated.
That model worked when environments were centralized and predictable. That’s not the case anymore.
Today, users are everywhere. Applications are spread across data centers, cloud platforms, and SaaS providers. Devices are constantly moving in and out of the environment. This makes everything distributed, and that’s forcing organizations to rethink how infrastructure is designed and delivered.
The Network Perimeter Is Gone
The traditional network perimeter used to be clear. You protected the edge, controlled access, and assumed that anything inside the network could be trusted. That assumption has been fading for a while. COVID accelerated it, but this was already happening.
When users can connect from anywhere and applications can live anywhere, location stops being a reliable control point so the model shifts. Instead of focusing on where a connection is coming from, you’re focused on who the user is, what they should have access to, and whether that access should be allowed. Identity and policy become the control point, not location.
From Inside-Out to Outside-In
This shift also flips how networks are designed. Traditionally, everything started in the data center and you built outward from there. This created ways for users to connect back into centralized resources and worked since most things lived there.
That’s not the case anymore. Users are outside and applications are distributed. Designing from the inside out doesn’t work for how thing operate now.
It has now become more of an outside-in model. You’re building infrastructure to support access from anywhere to anywhere, without assuming a fixed starting point. That may sound simple, but in practice it changes a lot. It affects how you think about performance, security, and how consistent the experience is for the user.
Hybrid Isn’t a Phase
There’s still this idea floating around that hybrid is temporary and eventually everything lands in one place, usually the cloud. In most environments, that’s not what’s happening.
What we see over and over is that some workloads move, some stay, and some move back depending on cost, performance, or just how well they run in a given environment. This makes hybrid the steady state, not the transition.
The challenge isn’t picking a destination. It’s making those environments work together in a way that’s consistent and manageable. This is where most organizations should spend their time.
Where Things Start to Break Down
One of the biggest issues I’ve seen over the years is chasing new technology too early. There’s always a “next big thing” that promises to simplify everything. And sometimes it does, but jumping in before it’s really proven tends to create more problems than it solves.
We’ve seen that pattern a lot. Early software-defined approaches, certain network extension models, different “next-gen” architectures. The idea is usually solid. The timing is the problem. You end up adding complexity, increasing cost, and in some cases creating risk that didn’t need to be there.
It’s not about avoiding new technology. It’s about being realistic about where it is in development and whether it’s ready for your environment.
The Real Issue Is Complexity
If there’s one thing that that is consistent, it’s complexity. It’s not just that environments are distributed. It’s that they’re made up of multiple platforms, multiple vendors, and multiple tools that don’t always line up perfectly.
What should be a single view of the environment ends up being, in most cases, multiple “single panes of glass.” And that’s where things start to break down operationally.
You need to be able to see what’s happening across environments, respond quickly, and not create a bunch of overhead just to keep things running. That’s where a lot of teams struggle. Anything that reduces that complexity or improves visibility tends to deliver real value.
What Actually Works
While many would like to believe it, there really isn’t a single platform that solves everything. What tends to work best is a combination of things designed to work together.
What becomes critical as things get more distributed is Identity-driven access, consistent policy enforcement, and visibility across environments. At the same time, you can’t ignore the user experience.
Security, by definition, introduces friction. The goal is to manage that in a way where the user doesn’t really feel it. If people have to jump through hoops just to access what they need, something’s probably off in the design.
The Bottom Line
Infrastructure strategy has fundamentally changed. It’s not about where things live anymore. It’s about how access is defined, controlled, and delivered across a distributed environment.
In most cases, it comes down to a simple idea: Don’t build for where things used to be, build for how they actually operate.
