US Signal at 25: Built for Change
Twenty-five years is a meaningful milestone for any company. In technology, it is especially significant.
Over the past quarter century, our industry has been reshaped repeatedly. We have moved from dark fiber and private networks to cloud computing, software-defined infrastructure, cybersecurity, and now artificial intelligence.
The technologies have changed dramatically.
The reason US Signal has continued to evolve has not.
Since joining the company three years ago, I have had the opportunity to learn its history from the people who lived it. Many of our employees have been here for 20 years or more. They have seen nearly every chapter of the company’s evolution firsthand.
Their stories are different, but the common thread is remarkably consistent:
US Signal has never adopted technology simply because it was new.
We evolved because our customers’ needs evolved.
That mindset has carried the company through 25 years of technological change. I believe it will carry us through the next 25 as well.
A Company Built by Listening
US Signal began in 2001 with a clear purpose: connect businesses across the Midwest through a reliable, high-performance fiber network.
As our customers’ businesses became more complex, the problems they needed us to solve became more complex too.
We expanded into colocation, internet connectivity, Ethernet, cloud infrastructure, disaster recovery, cybersecurity, managed services, OpenCloud, and increasingly, AI-ready infrastructure.
Each chapter reflected the same basic philosophy: solve the problems customers face today while helping them prepare for what comes next.
That distinction matters.
Many technology companies define themselves by the products they sell or the platforms they operate. I think it is more meaningful to define a company by the problems it helps its customers solve.
Technology will continue to change.
Helping customers navigate that change is the constant.
The People Behind the Infrastructure
Company anniversaries naturally invite us to look at the numbers.
Today, US Signal has more than 400 employees, over 10,500 route miles of fiber, 17 data centers, and customers across 45 states. Those are meaningful accomplishments, and they reflect years of investment, execution, and hard work.
But the numbers are not the full story.
The real story is the people behind them.
One longtime employee shared that customers rarely remember the underlying technology. They remember whether you showed up when it mattered.
Another described US Signal simply as “good people doing good work.”
A third remembered joining when the company had fewer than 50 employees and watching it grow into the organization it is today. His reflection was not primarily about networks, cloud platforms, or data centers. It was about the people who made that growth possible.
Those stories reinforce something I have come to believe deeply about this company.
Technology is what we build.
Trust is what we earn.
And trust is not created by a product, a press release, or a corporate slogan. It is built one conversation, one project, and one commitment at a time.
The Next Chapter
Anyone who has heard me speak recently has probably heard me talk about artificial intelligence.
AI is one of the most significant technological shifts we will see in our lifetimes. It will change how companies operate, how people work, and how digital infrastructure is designed and consumed.
But I do not view AI as a departure from US Signal’s history.
I view it as the next chapter of it.
Our customers are asking a new generation of questions:
How should we modernize our infrastructure?
Where should our applications and AI workloads live?
How do we balance performance, security, resilience, and cost?
How do we make investments today without limiting our options tomorrow?
The questions are different from the ones customers were asking five years ago. Five years from now, they will be different again.
Our responsibility remains the same.
Listen carefully.
Understand the problem.
Help customers evaluate their options.
Then build and operate solutions that allow them to move forward with confidence.
That is the same mindset that helped US Signal move from fiber into data centers, from data centers into cloud and managed services, and now toward the next generation of AI-ready digital infrastructure.
Built for What Comes Next
One of the most durable lessons in technology is that change is not an event. It is the environment.
The companies that succeed over long periods are rarely the ones that predict every trend correctly. No one does.
They are the companies that remain curious, stay close to their customers, invest in great people, and are willing to evolve when the market changes.
As the current steward of a company with a remarkable 25-year history, I am grateful to the employees, customers, and partners who built the foundation we stand on today.
To our employees: thank you for the expertise, resilience, and care you bring to this company.
To our customers: thank you for trusting us with infrastructure that is increasingly central to your businesses.
To our partners: thank you for helping us expand what is possible.
Twenty-five years is an important milestone, but it is not the destination.
The opportunity ahead of us is larger than it has ever been.
The technologies will continue to change. The needs of our customers will continue to evolve. And US Signal will continue doing what it has done for 25 years: listening, adapting, and building what comes next.
