Choose Your Enterprise Backup Deployment

Backup, Data Protection
There is no underestimating the need for companies to have a backup solution in place. However, not all organizations have the same backup needs.
US Signal has long made “customization” of its IT services one of its key differentiators. Its latest product update — new deployment options for its Enterprise Backup-as-a-Service (EBaaS) — exemplifies that commitment to tailoring solutions to best meet its customers’ needs.
EBaaS Overview
If you’re not familiar with EBaaS, it’s an enterprise-focused, fully managed backup solution that provides robust, reliable enterprise data backup and recovery for on-premises environments and data hosted in a US Signal cloud environment. All infrastructure and backup components are managed and monitored by US Signal, freeing up customers’ internal resources from dealing with the daily management and troubleshooting.
It’s a powerful, comprehensive backup solution, designed to HIPAA and PCI standards, that offers:
- Daily full backups with customizable retention policies
- Both agent or hypervisor-based backup operations to fit specific use cases
- Built-in source side deduplication to reduce the data transmitted over the network
- Encryption of backup datasets during transmission and at rest
- Data deduplicated at the source to optimize backup windows and performance
- Support for all major Windows and Linux operating systems and applications
- Simple pricing based on amount of protected data and number of protected devices
Agent-based Deployment
EBaaS’s original agent-based deployment offers file and application backup and restoration, including for individual files and folders, and protection for entire operating systems. (Workloads requiring application protection include Microsoft SQL or Microsoft Exchange.) The solution is enabled by installing the software agent directly onto the workload Source workloads can be on the customer premises or within the US Signal Enterprise Cloud (resource pools) or Hosted Private Cloud.
New Deployment Options
Not all customers require comprehensive file and application backup and restoration, which is why US Signal is now offering current customers a lower-cost option. New to EBaaS is image-based deployment, enabled by interacting directly with the hypervisor to take crash-consistent full image-level backups of virtual machines.
It’s intended for use with workloads that don’t require application specific backups. (Because it doesn’t interact directly with the operating system, this deployment model doesn’t restore application-level data or individual files and folders.) Benefits include little to no guest-level performance impact during the backup operations. And, after the first initial backup is completed, the time for backups to complete is significantly less than agent-based platforms.
In addition, customers are only charged for their data consumption. If the customer’s protected workloads lend themselves to data deduplication techniques, the customer can expect a lower consumption charge.
The EBaaS image-based deployment is currently only available for virtual machines within US Signal’s Enterprise Cloud (dedicated or flexible resource pools).
US Signal also offers a combined agent- and image-based deployment that can reduce customers’ total cost of operation for data protection while providing a comprehensive solution. The combined deployment model protects workloads that have application-level requirements with software agents, while protecting workloads that only require full crash consistent recovery points with the imaged-based protection. The per GB pricing is lower for the image-based data, which can lower overall customer costs.
